2012 Chinese New Year Performance

        In celebration of the 2012 Chinese New Year, and the Year of the Dragon, and in celebration of the CIE being named the CONFUCIUS INSTITUTE OF THE YEAR, the Confucius Institute in Edmonton has invited the Central China Normal University Performing Arts Troupe, to put on a Gala performance  for the citizens of Edmonton. The performance will be given at the Eva O Howard Theatre on the evening of February 11. We welcome you to come and experience this world class performance of Chinese cultural arts. Confucius Institute in Edmonton Honoured in China

       The Confucius Institute in Edmonton (CIE) was greatly honoured to have recently been awarded a“Confucius Institute of the Year” designation at the opening session of the 6th Confucius Institute Conference, December 14, 2011 in Beijing. The award was accepted on behalf of the CIE and its host (Edmonton Public Schools), by Superintendent Edgar Schmidt.
       The award recognized the work of the CIE in supporting and promoting Chinese language and culture education in schools, universities and for the general public. This work combined teacher training, cultural education, language resource support and the provision for over 1200 candidates per year for internationally recognized Chinese language assessments. The CIE also currently supports 14 Confucius Classrooms in 14 Edmonton Public Schools where 3000 students are learning the Chinese language.
       The CIE was also recognized for its support for cultural training for the business community, working as a partner with local industry. The CIE also now operates a full public access library of over 40 000 language and cultural resources for all ages.
       The award recognizes the success of the CIE in developing educational, cultural and economic linkages between Alberta and China.
       The CIE would like to acknowledge the support of its host, Edmonton Public Schools and its Chinese partner, the Education Department of Shandong Province in China.

Chinese New Year Performance

The Confucius Institute in Edmonton is going to host a concert for the celebration of Chinese New Year at 7:00 pm, Friday, February 18, 2011 at Eva O'Howard Theatre. About 45 musicians and dancers and artists are all from China. We are very fortunate to have this group of artists from Nanjing University Traditional Instruments Orchestra to Edmonton to perform.We are sure that the people in Edmonton will enjoy the beautiful Chinese music brought by this group of musicians and performers.Click the following links to get more information about this event.

Beijing Opera Workshop

beijingopera-3In celebration of the coming performances in Edmonton of the Mei Lanfang Beijing Opera, the foremost troupe in this discipline, The Confucius Institute is proud to host an exhibition of the work of  QI Qingnai, a master artist now living in the Edmonton area, who has produced many works capturing the spirit and intent of Beijing Opera.

The Exhibition will run at the Confucius Institute Cultural Centre From the evening of Sept 2 to the afternoon of Sept 8.

There will be an opening reception on the evening of Sept 2 (Thursday) from 7-9pm.

Exhibition hours will be 9 am to 6 pm weekdays.
